Explain of CNS Pathology
68.Cerebrum, Jacob-Creutzfeldt disease with spongiform encephalopathy, microscopic
The "holes" in the cortex of the cerebrum seen here represent a spongiform encephalopathy known as Jacob-Creutzfeldt disease. This is a form of rapidly progressive dementia. It is due to a poorly understood prion protein that has infectious potential, but the cases appear sporadically (1 in a million).
