Explain of Gastrointestinal Pathology
117.Melanosis coli, microscopic
The appearance of brown pigment-containing macrophages in the colonic mucosa occurs with a condition called melanosis coli. (This condition has nothing to do with melanomas). Grossly, this produces a brown to black discoloration of the mucosa. Chronic use of laxatives, particularly those containing cascara, senna, and aloe is one factor that may promote the appearance of melanosis coli.
